Going down the carb route, i had a problem with one Chinese carb. The tube that's stuck into the float bowl was glued in and not sweated in. Every so often a very small bit of glue would come away and get stuck in the main jet. It took me a long time to find the fault. You could hardly see the bits.
A 125 will also fit in. I had one in my old cub. You will need a larger bore downpipe as the standard is to small.
