Clutch and gears

It was time to tackle the clutch actuation and gear change. I‘ve learnt not to take for granted that these components will work well together, and this time was no different. So first thing was to fit a clutch actuation arm to the gear lever shaft and make sure it pointed to the centre of the clutch. If it doesn’t then the gearbox can change gear before the clutch has fully released. As you can see from this pic, mine was not pointing to the centre and moving it one spline made it worse. The next two levers were no better.
So I had to remove the clutch and primary gears etc to be able to try some different gear lever shafts. Fortunately I found one which allowed the clutch actuating lever to point perfectly at the centre of the clutch, but...
...now the arm that operates the gear change drum was no longer central to the pins. If left like this, you can end up having to press the gear lever twice to change gear, miss gears ll together or jump out of gear. So it was back to the spare bits box to find an arm that lined up properly. Success I soon found one. I’ve shown the three parts that need to be right for a good gear change and clutch operation.
Finally I was ready to put the C70ZZ clutch cover on, well sort of, a standard gasket needs to be cut away to give clearance around the oil pump drive gear:
Just one other bit of advice at this stage is don’t use early 6 volt C50 or C70 Clutch adjusters as they had smaller oil pumps and a correspondingly smaller oil way in the adjuster. If you fit them to 12V models the back pressure caused can cause the cam chain to jump on the oil pump drive sprocket and round the teeth off:
Finally the cover goes on:
