All done now, (I hope). All is tight and rigid although on one side I managed to get two washers between the tube and the rack whilst the other side was only one. Maybe because I'd tightened the other side already? Still, it seems to be OK, no droopiness now.
Thanks Griz for your comprehensive description of what I needed to do.
