I can only say "the tortoise and the hare". I too ride in a congested city but I don't feel the need to get away quickly from the lights. 9 out of 10 times the next set of lights are red anyway and I toodle up to all the vehicles that were quicker than me and are now sitting impatiently at the next lights.
I slow down as I approach, not roaring up to a dead stop, which means that often I am still moving and need only to change to second gear to pull away again.
I did this with a Ferrari in central London the other day, he was not amused that every time he stopped there I was sitting there either beside or behind him. <g>
