Did it snap at the spring link?

I've had this on a well cared for 530 chain on the Enfield, spring clip exits, outer plate falls off and the whole transmission force is sent through one link plate.

Like Davebike I do wince at stories of "my chain was solid and rusty so I put it in a bowl of diesel for a week and it's perfect now", usually it will let go within a few days/weeks hopefully without injury to the rider.
