Unless oil actually penetrates between the links it really doesn't do much good. Oil dripped on from a can tends to get flung straight off. Some of the aerosols are quite good but my preference is for the old-fashioned, messy and somewhat tedious 'boiling in oil' (Linklyfe, actually). That will give you a perfectly lubricated chain for many miles without further attention.
