Just like to give my experience. As you know I have a few exotic types of bike and believe it or not I'm a pretty law abiding citizen. I wouldn't be able to drive around without Tax and insurance because I keep thinking I'm going to be stopped around the next corner.
Anyway when I built the sidecar I just rang Carol Nash and told them there was a sidecar attached. A call back later and they said that was no problem the original bike was intact.
Then I built the trike and I rang them again, and they said they wanted an engineers report. So I brought it to a garage down the road and he wrote a report. Probably have it still somewhere. Anyway no problem they were happy.
The morel of the story is none of these things affected my policy. I was still paying the same money on a trike as a bike with a sidecar or a solo machine. The main thing is to declare it and there will never be a problem.
I have project 'What am I doing' on the go at the moment but again when I'm done I'll get an engineers report done(really it just specifies all the parts on the bike), and send it off.
I've changed insurance company to Aon since and the same applies.
