Hi John , i would not remove the plastic protector because if your chain comes into contact with the swing arm it will cut into the soft alloy which shall also cause more damage and strange noises !

The guide protector simply pulls apart from two lugs at the front of the swing arm top & bottom and simply pulls off or slots on and lifts off over the chain case mounts top and bottom see pic's below hope this helps .
Also i wouldn't of thought a new or second hand one would cost too much just a matter of finding one ? The new part is listed at lings for £6.54 plus postage .
