I got suspicious of the battery charger so I took Rubys battery off and tried that on it. It worked. So I took the battery off and the dial still showed charge so I've connected up the new battery again in the vain hope that I've tricked the charger into thinking there's a good battery there. At least it's not gone back down to zero.
(I'm no good with this electrickery stuff.)
