Battery charger problem

I bought the Lidl (or was it Aldi) battery charger a couple of months ago and tried it on Rubys battery and it worked fine. So today it was decided to charge Nuttys battery but I can't get the charger off standby mode. I can't select the charging mode so it's sat there in standby, not charging.
Any suggestions?
This battery was only a couple of months old when Nutty was put on sorn about two years ago so I expect it's pretty dead. But this new charger is supposed to be able to cope with that.
