Normal road gearing would be best since the hard uphill scrambling is only a tiny fraction of the route. Nothing that would stall you in first gear. At the handing-out of maps the marshals instructed everyone to go downhill (for safety's sake) on the one lane where tree-climber gearing would've helped.
Catspaws did fine in the dry, non-folding footpegs were a pain but not a liability.
I'd say all you need (that a cub hasn't got) is enough ground clearance to ride over an 8" obstacle without scraping or getting hung up. My £10 ebay sump guard absorbed the worst of the punishment but the exhaust got smashed flat at the header and bent up at the back so badly it jammed the kickstart
