If you can weld with a gasless mig to that standard you're a better man than I.
If the metal isn't perfectly clean you will get a lot of spatter and stutter for want of a better word. It's also difficult to get good penetration (as the bishop said to actress) obviously neccessary for strength. Personally I would fabricate and tack tne new panels with the gasless mig and use a 'professional' kit for the final seam weld. It would only be a few minutes work for a local welder once this has been done.
There may however be a 'knack' which I haven't yet learned. Let us know how you get on.
