Success of sorts.

I got a spark

Turns out that the wire from the engine to the coil(ie:- the black wire), was stripped just as it exited the loom and was touching the frame grounding out the coil. I moved the wires several times but due to the springiness of the loom it touched back again the engine again.

Had done a continuity test from the coil to the the pickup coil and it was fine. decided just to test from the loom to earth and bingo. 20 minutes later a dentist mirror and 3mm of stripped wire on the underside of the loom. Must have caught it somehow putting the engine back in.

First kick it fired up. Ran perfect for 2 minutes then started firing petrol from the bottom of the float bowl. Stripped the carb and the float is working perfect and stopping the petrol coming in from the taps with the sighest of touch. Will have to do a full strip and see how I go.

Why can nothing in life be easy.
