Don't just think of the fuel tank when investigating possible fuel leaks. The fuel system as a whole will be fuel tank, pipes, fuel tap, any filters that may be fitted, carburetor and all joins between them.
Look for holes, cracks, splits, corrosion, decay of materials, porous areas, chaffing and rubbing of the above.
Check cable ties and clips securing fuel pipes in the fuel system.
When looking for leaks, check for the obvious; eg fuel spilling out, damp areas, smell of fuel.
Take obvious care when dealing with petrol and searching for fuel leaks. Have no naked lights & flames, sources of ignition, sparks, halogen heaters, mates coming to see you with a fag lit. If you do end up with the worst case with fuel everywhere, don't operate any electrical switches (lights, plug sockets, switches on any other electrical equipment) as these can cause sparks which could ignite the fuel air mixture and burn you or blow you up.
When working with petrol always have plenty of ventilation to allow the vapours to go away, have window and doors open if inside a building, shed, garage.
Consider purchasing a dry power fire extinguisher, a 1kg dry powder is about a tenner on evilbay.
I don't know how much you know so sorry if I'm telling you how to suck eggs.
Let us know how you get on. Any questions just ask. Good Luck.
