Innova oil consumption

Hi a question to all you Innova owners (non injection) I checked my oil before departing on a 200 mile trip to the north of England, it was spot on when i left, by the time i got to my destination the dipstick was bone dry and it took just shy of half a litre to get it back to the top mark, considering the amount an Innova takes that's a massive loss in my book, i did cane it a bit and there was several miles of motorway involved but i don't think that usage is right, i have had bikes in the past which burns oil but the signs are there (blue smoke, poor performance etc) but my bike runs beautifully and smooth with no signs of engine wear (its only done 8000 miles from new) I'm just wondering if this is normal or should i be looking at reasons why this is happening? On my return journey home i shall check the oil at 100 mile intervals just to be safe, your advice would be appreciated, thanks in advance.
