Fuzz, you can shop around all you like, get cheaper rates here and there but some then still charge you a fee. You have to look at what you want. As you know the rates change from day to day and from place to place. What I found was that they'd advertise one rate but when you went to buy that, the rate had changed. In short you couldn't rely on any of them.
Do you want to be able to change back from USD when you get back? Then look for some where that offers that in the deal. But here again it'll probably be at a different rate to what you bought them for.
I used the P.O. once and the rate they gave me was different to the rate on the day that I ordered it. You have to remember that. I had a big argument with them about that. Of course, sometimes that can work in your favour.
Anyway now, just for convenience I go through my bank. They don't charge a fee either way and will even deliver it for a small fee and the rates are usually only pennies (or fractions of) different to other sellers.
I'm presuming that you will also be using your 'card' while over there? Watch out for surcharges for using the card abroad and yet again, exchange rates. Sometimes it can work out cheaper in the long run to take out cash (sometimes there's a teller fee on the machine, then the exchange rate fee plus the charge for using your card abroad). When taking out cash always take out the max to get your moneys worth out of all these fees (mine is £2.50 per transaction so £2.50 if I took out $20 or $200). And remember, if the max you can take out in cash on your card is, say, £200, in the USA it won't be the equivalent as such, but $200. Same number, different amount.
At the end of it all, check which cards that you've got offer the best deals when being used abroad and don't use the ones that'll end up charging you to fart.
