Thanks for those tips. I have since learned that there are vast quantities of fake Keihin carbs in circulation, so if we have one of those it's more than likely that the needle tip is suspect. My suspicions are also aroused by a quote from the supplier of a whole new carb for £25 (a new genuine float needle is £20)! But the fuel preserver sounds the best bet at the moment so I think we'll try that route first.
