John, you have my sympathies, I'm sure we have all done something similar, for example.....
My diesel engined Tiger has the choke cable attached to the 'engine stop' mechanism. After retrieving the bike from it's slumbers and charging the battery I set to starting the motor.
Not a chance, so I stripped the fuel pump, checked the injectors, glow plugs etc and eventually as nightfall set in gave up and put it away again.
About 4 am I awoke suddenly thinking about the engine stop position and had to get up and go outside to check.
Sure enough it was set to the stop position.
Next weekend, battery recharged and choke set to 'run' it fired first time.
The really embarrassing thing was that Cookie was witness to all these goings on and would occasionally throw in comments like - 'I thought your reason for choosing diesels was the absolute reliability' .
