Hi Bob.. Agreed with using red LEDs. Some folk think that white will be more efficient the rough a red lens but I agree with James Edinburgh there. A coloured lens works by blocking other frequencies then the colour, so it's wasted light.

If you were to use white, use the bright ones, not warm white. Warm white is made as a pleasing simulation of an incandescent bulb for room illumination, but they're quite inefficient compared to the bright white ones.

A rectifier would be a good idea, as the LEDs may net be up to the reverse-current part of the AC without blowing. Even better, why not convert the tail light to DC supply? It means it's at full brightness even at tickover or with the engine stopped. If you find the brown wire under the handlebars that supplies the tail light, disconnect it from the loom and connect it to any convenient black, it will come on with the ignition key.

An issue I had with the LED under the standard lens was the reflector.. It was sending the very directional LED light out at 45 degrees upwards and sideways so looking quite dim from rear-on (*very bad for the brake light) I solved this by flattening a circle in the reflector 'pyramids' on the inside of the lens with a soldering iron.
