When I've acquired bikes not run for donkeys years, it isn't unusual to find the piston rings gummed into their grooves. Obviously running them like that is going to wear the bore out pretty quick. I guess if you CBA to strip and check, Redex might be worth a shot.
This problem doesn't seem to happen with modern oils. Just the crap from 30-40 years ago.
