A 12v 50/70/90 engine or Chinese copy will fit straight in an old 6v 50/70 frame but not easily into a 6v 90 (they had bigger crankcase).

You are right in your memory that the 6v 50/70 was a sweeter more reliable engine tha the 6v 90 (50/70 had high voltage energy transfer ignition where 6v 90 was 6v battery powered)

If you want a 6v bike (made til '83 not '77 PeterR!! ;3 ) a 70 is a good choice. nearly as fast as a 90 anyway, and you can easily fit 12v or Chinese engines should you want to enlarge.

As has been mentioned above, the first 2 years of 12v still had roundy lamp style.(C50/70/90'C' - 1982/4ish approx). These are the same enclosed-tank frame as the square lamp ones (C50/70/90'E' onwards).. so you can actually fit the older bars, metal rear mudguard etc. on a square lamper to make it look like one of these. (I would do just that, if I was forced to own a square lamp one - the modern styling does nowt at all for me!! :) )

Spares for 6v 50/70 are no problem. Most 12v mechanical stuff is shared.
