If you want the classic look go for the round headlamp model. You are quite correct with your observations with regards to the reliability of the round headlamp c90 I have never rated them and they are slow. The square headlamp 12v is bullet proof as long as it has had and does have regular oil changes. The Lifan 110cc goes straight into the 12v square headlamp with no mods required whatsoever to the frame, but you may well need to swap the clutch casing off the Honda engine onto the Lifan so as the standard footrests will fit. Same with the 125 but you will need to mess around with a bigger carb and airbox set up to make it run right. If you want to go to the hassle of fitting it into a 6v frame knock yerself out but it's not a straight swap and then you have the conversion from 6v to 12v to contend with. Personally I would go for a 12v square headlamp model, as Peter says parts are easily available etc.Honda did do a 12v Model but retaining the round headlamp, best of both worlds, but these are few and far between. You can tell this model apart from the rest as it has the fuel tank in frame but the round headlamp out front.
