I don't think your over-stressing the motor but it does sound like your using too much fuel for the speeds.

How many miles and how old is the bike?

I'd try a compression test and at the least replace the carb needle and needle jet.

You may have a leaky exhaust valve, most of the motors I have rebuilt have needed the exhaust valve lightly re-seating with some fine paste.
