Hi James
Don’t be put off by the flat earth society (no offence chaps <3 ), Burt Munro wasn’t and neither am I, lol. However they do have a point, trying to improve on the original set-up is no small feat as these bikes in standard form with the tappets set correctly go bloomin well. A couple of standard ones just did well in excess of 1000 miles in 24 hrs, and when Newt on his standard Cub90 and myself on my modified one did John O Groats to Lands End in 24 hours: Newts was still running perfectly at the end, and mine melted its piston :( . But if you enjoy tinkering, then don’t let any of that put you off, it hasn’t put me off and I no longer melt pistons :) The bad news is that in my experience; no so single component will provide an improvement in performance, especially the CDI. The CDI on a Cub 90 does nothing more exciting than move the timing from the trailing edge of the blob on your flywheel at low revs to the leading edge of the blob at high revs. Performance CDI’s offered for Cub90’s and pit bikes with AC ignition systems do absolutely bog all, and don’t believe any rubbish about the std CDI having a rev limiter either. I’m afraid the road to gaining more performance from a Cub90 engine is a long and expensive one, this is why a lot of riders are now either leaving them standard or simply swapping the entire engine for Lifan 110 which provides a 4 speed box and a little more grunt up the hills.
All the best and happy tinkering.
Neil
