When you say oily around the top cover, do you mean the tappet cover?
They have O rings in them that you get replacements in a full gasket set.
If it's from the top of the motor (ie the bit inside the frame) then it could be the breather pipe has departed. I can't see this causing a bit oil loss but might show up as misting over the engine top.
If it's burning oil then you should see a blue tinge to the exhaust under load, especially when cold.
If it's performing well and you have decent compression when kick starting then I doubt you have a leaking valve, if a shop did the rebore then they should have replaced the valve guide seals - might be worth asking the question.
