My first car was a Volvo 144 and every now and then the engine cut out for apparently no reason. After a few minutes it would start again and be fine until it did it again. Turns out it was the fuel lift pump had very small pinprick holes in it and the fuel would drain out of it, leaving the the carbs starved of petrol. I smeared Araldite into the holes to seal them up and the problem stopped. Could you use Araldite to fill the porous portions of the inside of the float bowl?
