Don't know if it's relevant andy, but I've had a series of leaks on the 87cc OHV engines, which use a thin copper gasket. I've taken to giving them a thin smear of the white silicon gasket cement rated to 600 degrees Fahrenheit. They've held up well, for what it's worth.
