the answer is that they are subtly different, different bearing on the layshaft to be precise. I have changed my mind and get the case crack tigged up by a local motorsport specialist.
i suspect that the cases may be interchangeable, but the motor is in such good condition generally, that I will keep the guts in it if I can.
