Hiya Griz. There's not really any advantage in a bigger battery. It's only there for a bit more capacity to work the starter on a cold morning.. There's nowt to be gained on a kickstart bike.
To convert the rear lamp to DC, find the brown wire that heads off into the the loom behind the headlamp to power the tail lamp. Disconnect it, and connect it instead to a convenient black such as the neutral lamp supply. Tail light should now come on with the ignition key.
