I know how much you worry about getting lost (especially in darkest Wales), so here's the route we came back last year. (In reverse though)
Ripley C90 pitstop
A38/A50 to Uttoxeter
A518 to Stafford then Newport
A41/B4379 to Shifnal
A4169/B4379/A442 to Bridgenorth
A458/B4364 past the clapped out Townmate outside that pub
A4117 for .75 of a mile onto
A49 round Ludlow
A4113 to Knighton
A488 to Penybont
A44 head west then ask 
Alternative route suggestions are always welcome as I don't think I'm always right. (just most of the time)
