Ahh I remember torotrak very well, with the epicyclic 'geared neutral' position.

Increase gearing and you go forwards, decrease it and you go backwards.

I run diesel motorcycles so at most you have between 1000 and 3600 rpm available so CVT's make a lot of sense. Practical application however is a real problem with the Comet belt and Smart Car CVT's not being quite up the expectations as yet.
