Thanks for the posts guys.
I'm going to check the tappets anyway just in case, though I don't think it's tappets as the noise isn't coming from the head...however, it is a very similar noise in both volume and pitch to an old Vauxhall Astra I once had that had a problem with one of the hydraulic lifters for the cam.
Feeling really gutted as I had a 700 mile road trip planned for this week
