Piston Slap! Your thoughts please

Thursday evening when I fired up my Innova to leave work I was met by a the normal happy tickover noises but but also a rather alarming clicky clacky noise from the engine. Other than the noise the engine is running as good as ever. When on throttle you can hear the noise and as you throttle off the noise reduces a lot. I did the screwdriver between ear and engine thing to try to locate the source. It sounds loudest on the clutch side around the crank part of the case and also at the base of the cylinder. I changed the oil and there was no evidence of any shrapnel on my magnetic sump plug, bit of swarf though. I took the bike to my local shop today and he thought it sounded like piston slap and asked if the bike had seized or slowed dramatically (which it hadn't at any point). He asked if it had run low on oil which again it hadn't and I change it every 1000miles. In the end he felt it may have seized after stopping due to overheating and the residual extra heat inside the engine.
Firstly, anyone heard of a switch off seizure?
Secondly, the guy felt it was safe to keep running but I would probably need to get it sorted soon. As I have no spare cash at the moment how long due you think it can safely run?
Lastly, If anyone has any other ideas of possible causes or thigs I can check let me know.
Thanks
Howard
