Dave,

As a temporary fix, could you pull the cable back through the eye that the trunnion rests in? Then lock it to itself? That way it couldn't fall out. Though it would be really rough and bodgy. It would get you back home... Especially as the rear brake would be the preferential slowing mechanism.
