Hi Bob,
With you using a plain rectifier (assuming it is) you will be ignoring half of the AC sine wave. If you want to capture all of it, you would need a bridge rectifier.
I am unsure of the exact terms, but AC is a push-pull current flow, so resistors behave slightly differently. Though as you are only capturing the push, rather than the pull (again with the standard rectifier) you will have an equal on then off then on then off and so forth.
