Hi Aidan,
Personally, I agree the problems with slow SQL queries sounds like the server is overloaded. As it happens, I did design the database and wrote all the queries. 
However the query in question is really simple and when I executed it on the server manually took 0.0008 seconds to complete. Again to me it points at load.
Your help could be invaluable, with just reading the SQL to make sure I am not doing something really daft.
After the problems with the site this morning, I think it might be time to go paid.
