You can slacken off all the bolts first to allow maximum movement, just completely do one side at a time. Have all the bolts, nuts washers back on loosely before tightening. You might have to hold the back end of the carrier up a bit when nipping the nuts tight to get it at exactly the right angle. No brute force required.
