Ian These items cost very little to replace.
the best thing for you, would be to invest in a Haynes manual, it will show you all the relevant diagrams and info etc.
The best way of checking if the bearing/ sleeve is worn is to spin the rear wheel without the chain attached or the chain guard on and listen for any unusual noises, it should spin and spin with no resistance. To check for any wear/play in the hub bearing, try to wobble the wheel, there should be no movement or side play.
