John! I wondered where you had gone!
Your experience is sadly par for the course. The whole camping thing is very much an honesty box system, and it has been noted some of the younger members are taking advantage of this.
TBH I don't really want to get involved, but in the case of the Duke William, I got us in there through my connection with the Ipswich canoe club.
I think Mel is chilled about payment because maybe he thinks I wouldn't keep company of dishonest people. Sadly this seems not to be the case.
In the case of past East Anglian rideouts, it has been left to me to collect the money. I did keep a record in my phone TBH but mainly because my memory isn't so good.
It's enough organising co-ordinating the event without collecting money, let alone issuing receipts.
I ended up with a big bag of money which I took to the campsite owners. They then said extra people was plus a pound. Might have been another add on too, I can't recall. Which I hadn't collected. Couldn't be arsed to trawl around saying 'you owe me a quid' so paid it myself, ended up paying about £15 of my own money in.
The following year I was more on the ball. Took the money over, said there you go, that's it, everything I've collected.
Someone came forward and gave me £8.50 I had missed. So I dropped that in as I was leaving. The woman couldn't believe I had done so, remarking 'How honest'
Frankly, I was nonplussed! WTF was she doing asking me to collect the money if she thought I might be dishonest?
At the end of the day, no receipts were given to me either. Whether the £3-400 went on the tax return, and whether they are honest, I have no idea.
It's one of those things.
In this instance I was surprised to see Michael collecting the money, as I thought it was Marks remit. They didn't get double from me, I can tell ya!
All I can say John, is others seem less troubled by this than you and I.
Honesty is often between your conscience and your God.
It would be a shame not to see you at meets again, people with such morals are a great asset.
You know you did no wrong. And surely, you can't be that fussed what others think, to be riding such silly little bikes!
Put it behind you and join us at Matlock. Please?
