Hi Ian.
If your carb is the downdraft one ( which it should be ) the throttle slide will be going in from the front of the bike.
Later ones the slide went in from the top.
Downdraft carb...choke is ON when the lever is in the 12'oclock upwards position & OFF when in the horizontal position facing forwards.
I always switch the fuel off after every trip, the reason being that the later Cubs only have an ON position on the fuel as they have a fuel gauge .
Problem is, if you leave your fuel ON & park up in the middle of nowhere & the carb overflows you will loose your whole tank of fuel,& you will be stranded.
Stain under the bike is probably from the carb overflowing.
Lastly as I said your bike should be 6v...
Can you use an Optimate on 6v battery ?
