Well I couldn't get hold of any cleaner (in the stix, thailand) but did manage to get an old wave speedo at a second hand parts shop, I was looking for a c900 one as it's known here but they didn't have one. Any way dismantled both binicles and swapped the speedometers and it works fine apart from the milage is now backwards and upside down. This is because the screws that screw it to the clock panel are above the milage readout on an (older) wave and below on my dream (also I'm too lazy to try and change any of it). Anyway thanks for the advice, and hope I haven't bored anyone with this interesting piece of information.
