'Lapping in' means using valve grinding paste and rotating the parts against each other to make a good fit.
Don't weld a blob on anything!!!!!!!!!!! 
As Andy says above, the key is mainly there to line the flywheel up with the crank when fitting it, for correct ignition timing.. Once the flywheel nut's tightened correctly there's no rotational force against it.. The flywheel nut must have been loose to have damaged the key.
