At school I had a one French teacher who was a doctor of languages and she was too intelligent for her own good or for us, another one who spoke with such a strong Glaswegian accent that no one could understand what she was saying in English let alone in French. As for English language teaching and learning grammar in my native English tongue, all that was non existant. I know in the age of Empire that shouting at foregners was acceptable and if they still didn't understand, then shooting them was fine, but it doesn't seem to cut the mustard nowadays.
