I think it depends on whether it's OHV or OHC. I've been led to believe a 12v will fit into the early OHV frames, possibly with just minor relieving of certain areas of the frame. No experience of it myself, mind.
The OHV engines are a joy when running right. Not as quick or reliable (electrically) as my 12v bikes though.
If it's got the dual ratio 4 speed box (8 gears) then it's OHC 6v, and it will require a bracket and some effort to install the later 12v engine.
Look forward to seeing some pics of it!
