I fit it into a cycle handlebar bag with map pocket on top which I have fitted into the centre spine , I use an ear piece also for directions but it can be seen in all conditions with bright sunshine being worst .
It's been fitted happily for over 4 years now so i think it's a simple proven system and carry all my puncture repair gear levers and spare tube spares ect.. inside the bag and on the odd occasion have also used it for beer overload ! 
! Also with the connection being under the seat in the bin it is not exposed to the wet ! 
!
When i put the satnav into the map pocket i simply connect in the underseat bin and just have a small amount of cable exposed and has always ran well .
