It can be useful to think of electricity like plumbing. Voltage (V) is the pressure forcing the water to flow, Current (I) is the rate of water flow, Resistance (R) is a narrowing of the pipe which slows down the rate of water flow.

A diode (rectifier) is a one way valve whilst a bridge (full wave) rectifier is two valves in parallel, one allowing positive pressure flow and the other allowing negative pressure flow allowing the push/pull flow that Ric mentions.

A capacitor acts like a rubber membrane sealing the pipe stopping direct water flow but allowing the push/pull of a continuously changing pressure ie blocks DC but passes AC.

Ohms law states V=IR, using the plumbing analogy this means that for a given water pressure (V) decreasing the pipe diameter(increasing R) will give a reduced water flow rate (I decreases)

Hope that helps someone.
