With reasonably steady driving and meticulous lubrication, you should get at least 25,000 miles. The sprocket (and the chain) are knackered when the teeth looked hooked, or when you can pull the chain away from the rear sprocket by more than about 1mm. If you take the chain off and clean it thoroughly, then lay it flat and alternately push the links tightly together, then pull them apart, the maximum permissible play is about 1/4" per foot
