The irony of choosing a small bike for the trip is that, at the time, customs required you to either insure your bike or pay a bond of 150% of its value to stop you selling it enroute. (You get issued with a Carnet de Passage that is validated when entering and leaving a country). Because I think Iran was considered a conflict zone then, insurance was not possible, so I paid (and eventually got back) the 150% of the bike's value. Imagine doing that for one of the mega tourers!
