Bob, it's like this.....
The capacitor is a little dustbin into which all the electrickery gets placed when the points are closed.
When they open it's like lifting the lid suddenly like and they all escape to play inside the coil.
The coil getting sooo much excitement has to let off steam and causes the plug to fire.
That's how I explained it to my nephew and he seemed satisfied, the alternative explanation involed a very small gnome mining sparletts which he stored in a small round silver biscuit tin that he had to empty into the coil.
Either one will work.
