Clutch went the other day right outside a used car dealership. I pulled off the main road into their entrance, plenty room. Had a look and decided that the socket that holds the clutch cable outer at the pedal end must have given way. Press the pedal and the whole cable, outer and all was drawn through the bulkhead. Slimy car salesman sidles up and I says. Clutch. He says I'll get a mechanic to have a quick look at it for you if you like. Great says I, he might know of a quick fix to get me home..... Mechanic arrives and I point out the fault to him. He lies on the engine and faffs about while smiling at the salesman. Complete new clutch and cable needed about £800 fitted. Bollox says I and my mate turned up and towed me home. Quick search on the net and its a common polo problem. The bracket that holds the clutch cable outer breaks away from the pedal box and requires welding back on. Trouble is theres no way to get in there to do it. The pedal box has to come out. To get the pedal box out the dash and steering column have to come out and its ten hours labour. Some people manage to do it themselves but they all agree that its a pig of a job. So thinks I why not make a top hat arrangement where the cable outer sits at the correct distance through the bulkhead and mount this on a plate up against the bulkhead. Lathe, bit of brass bar, bit of sheet steel and two hours work and tadaa. Fitted it in and it all works perfectly. The car drives perfectly. Still fed up with it though so am going to change it. Regards. Bob.
